A's Pitching Coach, Gil Patterson to throw out Ceremonial First Pitch on Saturday June 9, 2012
Making his professional debut with Oneonta in 1975, he went 8-4 with a 1.95 ERA and six complete games in 14 appearances. Leading the NY Penn League (A) with 97 K’s and 106 innings of work in just his first season out of Miami Dade South College where he was selected team MVP. At the young age of 21 Patterson joined the Yankees big club where he appeared in 10 games, 6 of those being starts, and gaining with first win in the Major League’s on May 25, 1976. Later that season he would find himself a part of the World Series Champion New York Yankees. After being hampered by injuries that would remove him from the ‘78-‘79 seasons, Patterson through hard work and determination taught himself to throw from his left arm. Gil experimented pitching left handed in spring training of 1979, but was unable to make the team as a LHP and had to wait another year to recover from his shoulder surgery. Over the next four seasons Patterson spent time with the Yankees, Giants, and Braves before needing Tommy John surgery following the 1983 Spring Training that would inevitably end his playing career. Gil would start his storied coaching career in 1984 with the Yankees Minor League system. Moving to the A’s Organization in 1991, Gil spent seven seasons moving up through the organizations ranks and eventually became the roving pitching instructor for the A’s organization before joining the D-backs in 1997. Between 1997-07 Gil spent time with the D-backs, Yankees and Blue Jays where he was pitching coach for Cy Young winning pitcher Roy Halladay in 2003; Gil has since been dubbed the "Cutter Guru" and deservedly so! Today Coach Patterson makes his home in Scottsdale, Arizona and has been back with the A’s organization as the clubs Pitching Coach & Coordinator since 2008.
